Computer Security Essentials
Keeping a Microsoft Windows computer safe is a constant challenge.
Note: most of the links on this page open up in a separate browser window.
Five essentials for safe computing:
- Apply security updates for your operating system and major
applications.
- Keep antivirus software up-to-date.
You probably got a short-term license for antivirus software with your computer.
Do you have the most recent virus definitions?
- Use a hardware or software firewall to close your computer's "gates, ports, doors and windows".
If you have only one computer, a software firewall is OK if it's properly configured.
If you have a home or office network, use a hardware firewall.
- Use adware and spyware blocking software to keep your personal information
safe and to keep your computer running smoothly.
Next to viruses, spyware is the most likely culprit if your computer is running slow.
- Avoid cutesy and/or unethical software like the plague, because that's what they are!.
Do you know what those free browser add-ins, file swapping programs and so-called optimizers really do?
Many come with adware and spyware that put your personal information at risk and bog down your computer.

Two highly recommended ways to you safer
and happier on the internet:
- Use Firefox
instead of Internet Explorer as your main browser. Firefox
has better security features and easy-to-use pop-up and ad
blocking.
You'll love the extra speed, convenience and better appearance when you
don't waste time and screen space with ads.
You can keep Internet Explorer on your system for connecting to
Microsoft Windows Update.
- Use Mozilla Thunderbird instead of Outlook
Express as your e-mail program.
The design and "features" of Outlook Express are inherently
unsafe.
At the very least, turn off the message preview pane in Outlook Express
--
it's like an open door to malicious mail, web sites, and
spammers.

Internet Connection Firewall
|
Microsoft Windows XP includes a software firewall, called Internet
Connection Firewall.
Have you turned it on?
You may want to use one of these other firewalls instead, since they
can trap outgoing as well as incoming network traffic.
If you have more than one computer on a home or office network, you
should use a hardware firewall between your network and the
